Special event openings have become a highlight for garden lovers across the country, and there are many opportunities available throughout the southwest over the summer.
Farrs in Beaminster is one such gem that will open to the public on the 20th of August this year. However, be quick, as tickets are limited and pre-booking is essential.
Owned and developed by John and Jennie Makepeace, visitors can enjoy several distinctive walled gardens, rolling lawns, sculpture and giant topiary around one of Beaminster’s historic town houses.
John’s inspirational grass garden and Jennie’s very contrasting garden, with an oak fruit cage, are a riot of colour. Look out for a glasshouse, a straw bale studio, and an orchard, along with remarkable trees, planked and seasoning in an open-sided barn for future furniture commissions.
A limited number of tickets are available for this special afternoon, hosted by John and Jennie, from 2 to 4.30pm. John will offer a warm welcome at 2pm in the main rooms of the house, followed by a talk on his furniture design and recent commissions. Jennie will then lead a guided walk around the gardens, followed by a cream tea in the house or garden, weather-dependent. There are some gravel paths, with an alternative wheelchair route through the orchard.
