Mapperton House & Gardens is hosting its first ever Living History Weekend this September, as an English Civil War reenactment group brings the estate’s grounds to life for a family friendly day out.
Taking place on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September from 10am to 5pm, the event marks the first time Mapperton has hosted a reenactment weekend of this kind, opening up the estate for a day of demonstrations, drills and hands on history for all ages.
Visitors can explore a period camp set up across the grounds, where reenactors will demonstrate cooking and sewing and give a glimpse of how families lived during the seventeenth century. On the croquet lawn there will be drill and drumming practice, before the day’s battle unfolds on the field beyond.
Throughout the day there is a full programme of musket demonstrations, pike drills and a parade, alongside period games for younger visitors. Drums will sound across the grounds all day, creating a lively and immersive atmosphere for the whole family.
While battle demonstrations are a highlight, the weekend is designed as a family day out too, with plenty to see and do beyond the field, from the period camp to the games and activities aimed at younger visitors.
Operations Manager at Mapperton, Robert Blincow, said: ‘This is a great new event for the area and something Mapperton hasn’t done before. I’ve loved running events like this at other venues over the years and I’m really pleased to bring it here. It’s set to be a great community occasion and a brilliant family day out.’
