While chatting with Lisa Loader for our cover story in this issue, I was struck by her interest in community and connectedness. It’s an attitude that resonates with this magazine’s roots. In November, we will have been publishing the monthly Marshwood Vale Magazine for 25 years. But it nearly didn’t happen. With 9/11, Foot and Mouth disease, and a significant personal loss converging as we launched, it’s a miracle we managed to get the first issue out. From the start, we were keen to highlight what sometimes feels like a living collage of life across West Dorset, South Somerset and East Devon. The key aim was to celebrate the connections between people, place, and local culture—hence the determination to cross borders rather than be constrained by them. Across the pages of this issue, you’ll find the same common thread—the power of community-driven innovation and openness. Whether it’s Lisa’s inspiring journey or the many festivals and gatherings—such as Bardfest, Lyme Folk Weekend, and the Dorset One World Festival—each event shows how shared experiences bring a sense of belonging. Local events create opportunities for all ages to engage—from horticultural shows and garden openings to music and theatre. Community initiatives like Bridport Food Matters and 22 East Street Studios show how collaboration can change spaces and lives. Stories of pioneers like that of Amy Johnson on page 28 remind us of the courage to break boundaries, while features on nature help us nurture both our environment and our locality. While it’s fair to say that many people across the country will claim the place they live is particularly special, that magic evolves from an attitude. It is creativity, kindness, and a willingness to come together that can shape a thriving, inclusive community.
