2008 Dorset Gardens Trust Garden Day at Thornhill House near
Stalbridge, Dorset
from 10am 5pm, no dogs please). A magnificent setting,
on public view for the very first time. There will be specialist
plant stalls, craft and other stalls, displays, lectures by celebrity
speakers, delicious lunches, cream teas, and a bar. Thornhill
House was built by Hogarths son-in-law Sir James Thornhill
in about 1725, and in 2000 was acquired by Tommy Kyle, under whose
guiding hand a rapid transformation has been taking place. The
estate has been enlarged, a deer park created, a lake excavated
and hundreds of semi-mature trees planted and avenues extended.
The house, now approached through an imposing entrance and impeccably
restored, is terraced on three sides and clothed in magnolia and
wisteria. Tommy Kyles previous garden was at Ven at Milborne
Port where he excitingly remodelled the gardens. He also previously
made prominent gardens in the USA at Seven Pines Farm, New Hope,
Bucks County, Pennsylvania and in France at Chateau de la Croix
des Gardes near Cannes, and Chateau Manville in Normandy.
Lectures will be given by Anna Pavord, Tom Stuart-Smith and Derry
Watkins, and introduced by Penelope Hobhouse. The specialist plant
stalls will include Avon Bulbs, Elworthy Cottage Plants, Long
Acre Plants, RD Plants, Special Plants/Derry Watkins, and Bellamont
Topiary.
