The Arts Awards 2008

After two very successful and popular awards programmes over the last two years, Food Awards in 2006 and Community Awards in 2007, The Marshwood Vale Magazine is set to launch it’s Arts Awards programme for 2008.

Part of a series of awards that seek to highlight and celebrate the unique culture of the area, The Marshwood Vale Magazine Arts Awards will again be divided into six different categories, that this year focus on the visual arts.

The categiories are
Drawing/Painting
Photography
Furniture
Sculpture
Ceramics
Textiles

It is hoped that these categories will provide local artists with the opportunity to show some of the excellent work being produced throughout West Dorset, South Somerset and East Devon.

The initial line up of judges includes artist John Hubbard, sculptor Emily Young, furniture designer John Makepeace, ceramic artist Kate Malone, photographer Roger Mayne and textile artist Caroline Broadhead.

There is no entry fee, and from June until September, those wishing to enter will be asked to supply high quality photographs of up to six pieces of their work for the judges to view.

Once a shortlist has been finalised the judges will wish to see original work from the finalists to base their decisions on a body of work. An awards ceremony will then be held in the Marshwood Vale in November 2008.
In order to highlight the winners and bring their work to a wider local audience, The Marshwood Vale Magazine will also be hosting a two-week exhibition of work from the finalists at the Bridport Arts Centre in December 2008.

As in previous years’ awards programmes, a selection of sponsors will be providing a prize package for the winners. For information on this and how to get involved, watch out for the Arts Awards logo on the right in future issues of The Marshwood Vale Magazine.
